Are you losing yourself this Summer or revealing who you really are?

Many women come to me when they begin to notice something feels slightly off — even in moments that are supposed to feel light, easy or enjoyable. This often happens in environments like summer, travel or social settings where structure is reduced.

The question is not whether something is wrong. The question is: What is being revealed?

Does Summer change your behavior or reveal existing patterns?

Summer does not change who you are. It often removes routine, structure and external pressure. When that happens, patterns that were already present become easier to see.

This aligns with psychological concepts related to automatic behavior patterns, often referred to as automaticity — the tendency to rely on ingrained habits when cognitive load is reduced. In simpler terms, when you are more relaxed, you are more likely to default to what is already familiar.

Why do relationship patterns show up more clearly in relaxed environments?

When structure is reduced, emotional patterns often become more visible. This can include:

  • Seeking attention or validation.
  • Tolerating behavior that does not feel aligned.
  • Prioritizing connection over self-trust.
  • Abandoning personal boundaries in subtle ways.

These patterns are not created by the environment. They are revealed by it.

Why is self-love the foundation of a healthy relationship?

Many people say they want love, connection or a relationship. However, without a foundation of self-love, relationships often become unstable.

As explored in my latest book Becoming Lavishly Loving: “Loving yourself first is not a cliché. It is not selfish. It is not indulgent. It is foundational.”

When self-love is not established, people often look outside themselves for validation, stability or identity. This can lead to:

  • Over-giving.
  • People-pleasing.
  • Staying in misaligned situations.

How do you know if you’re losing yourself in a relationship?

Being self-aware is the key to knowing if you’re losing yourself or thriving in a relationship. If you are losing yourself, you may notice:

  • Your decisions are influenced by how someone else will respond.
  • You feel disconnected from your own preferences and priorities.
  • You tolerate situations that do not feel aligned.
  • You feel uncertain about your own voice or needs.

These signs are often subtle and develop over time. They usually appear as that small voice inside you that you can often dismiss as being judgmental or accusing.

How do you begin choosing yourself?

Choosing yourself does not require a dramatic shift. It begins with awareness and small, intentional decisions. This includes:

  • Recognizing what feels misaligned.
  • Honoring discomfort instead of dismissing it.
  • Identifying boundaries.
  • Making choices that reflect your values.

As your awareness increases, your decisions begin to change. Lavishly loving yourself doesn’t make you selfish as long as you are looking at how aligned other people are with your inner knowing.
