Why are you still not taking action when you know it’s time for change?

Many women come to me when they find themselves in this exact moment — they know something needs to change, they can see it clearly and yet, they haven’t moved. This does not happen because of confusion. It happens because they are in a specific stage of the change process — where clarity is present, but action has not yet begun.

What stage of change are you in when you feel stuck after clarity?

If you know something needs to change but have not taken action, you are most likely in what psychologists refer to as the Preparation or Determination Stage of change. This stage comes after awareness and before consistent action.

Research on behavioral change shows that change occurs in stages:

  • Precontemplation.
  • Contemplation.
  • Preparation/Determination.
  • Action.
  • Maintenance.
  • Relapse.

The moment where you feel “stuck” is often not the beginning. It is in the middle — where you understand what needs to change but have not yet moved forward.

Why is it so difficult to act after clarity?

There are several psychological reasons why action does not immediately follow clarity. Psychologist Leon Festinger described the discomfort that occurs when behavior doesn’t align with belief. This can create hesitation rather than immediate action.

Behavioral economists Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky found that people are more motivated to avoid loss than pursue gain. This means even positive change can feel threatening if it involves losing comfort, familiarity or connection.

In Atomic Habits, James Clear explained that lasting change is tied to identity. This means change is not just about doing something differently. It’s about becoming someone new which can feel uncertain.

What role does fear play in delaying change?

Fear is one of the most common reasons people do not act after gaining clarity. It can show up as:

  • Fear of loss.
  • Fear of disruption.
  • Fear of being wrong.
  • Fear of failure or success.

Neuroscientist Joseph E. LeDoux defined fear as the awareness that something important to your well-being may be at risk. This means that even when change is right, your brain may still perceive it as a threat.

How do you move forward when you already know what needs to change?

Moving forward doesn’t require more clarity. It requires aligned action. You can begin by:

  • Taking one step instead of trying to complete the full change.
  • Allowing discomfort without interpreting it as failure.
  • Staying connected to what you already know.
  • Observing your emotional responses without reacting to them.
  • Letting action build confidence over time.

There’s something important to remember about this process. Change happens through consistent movement — not perfect readiness. Sometimes, we have to take the first step even when we don’t think we’re ready, then it moves us forward, gives us confidence and makes us ready.

The difference between knowing & moving

Clarity allows you to see what needs to change. Movement begins when you trust that clarity enough to act.

If you continue to hesitate, the gap remains. If you begin to move — even in small ways — that gap begins to close.
