How do you know you’ve changed when you still feel like the same person?

Personal transformation is often easier to recognize in retrospect than while it’s happening. We tend to look for visible evidence of change: A new career. A healthier relationship. A degree. A business. A financial milestone. A dramatically different appearance. Yet, some of the most important evidence may be found somewhere else. –– In our responses.

  • You may encounter something that would have devastated you 10 years ago and realize it now disappoints you for an afternoon.
  • You may receive a professional rejection and discover that it no longer causes you to question your abilities.
  • You may recognize an unhealthy relationship dynamic sooner.
  • You may protect an idea instead of explaining it to people who don’t understand it.
  • You may realize the dream you desperately wanted years ago doesn’t fit you anymore.

The circumstances may look familiar. The difference is that you aren’t the same.

Why is personal growth so difficult to recognize?

Real transformation tends to happen gradually. In The Princess Guide to Loving Yourself First, I described transformation using the image of a caterpillar entering a dark cocoon before emerging as a butterfly. That’s what becoming can feel like.

From the outside, it may appear that nothing is happening. Inside, everything is changing.

I experienced this myself when people began telling me they could see internal changes in me that I couldn’t yet recognize. I could see the external transformation, but internally, as I wrote at the time, “I still felt like a hot mess in a tiara.”

Years later, I could see what they had seen. My values hadn’t changed. My thinking, behavior and standards had.

Can difficult experiences actually change us?

Psychologists Drs. Richard Tedeschi and Lawrence Calhoun developed the concept of Post-Traumatic Growth to describe positive psychological changes that can sometimes emerge through struggling with highly challenging circumstances. I encourage you to pay attention to the wording they use. The distinction matters.

Trauma itself doesn’t make us better. Suffering doesn’t automatically produce wisdom. What we do with what happened to us is the difference maker. It’s important to take a minute to realize that:

  • Our experiences can become information.
  • Disappointment can become discernment.
  • Mistakes can become wisdom.
  • Rejection can become redirection.
  • Heartbreak can become greater self-knowledge.
  • Failure can refine how we approach the next opportunity.

As I’ve said many times in my work over the years, it isn’t what happens to us that matters the most. It’s what we do with that experience that determines if we become bitter or better.

Does evolution only happen in relationships?

No. It doesn’t. Romantic relationships tend to get the most attention in our lives, but we are multi-faceted –– like a diamond. So, too, is our evolution. It takes place in all areas of our lives.

The evolution of the Elegant Woman is holistic. It may appear in her career, relationships, finances, identity, thinking, dreams, standards, spiritual life, self-care and decision-making.

Years ago, I received a rejection email for a news reporting position that was seeking someone with 3 years of experience when I had decades of professional experience working in newsrooms for publications. My response to this message surprised even me. I really needed a job at that time. Instead of getting angry or crying … I laughed.

It wasn’t that professional rejection suddenly felt wonderful. I had changed. I knew more about who I was, how I worked best and what kind of professional life fit me.

That’s when it hit me that hearing the word no can actually be protection disguised as rejection. Sometimes, what looks like rejection is simply evidence that an opportunity doesn’t align with the woman you’ve become.

What are signs that you’ve changed?

Recognizing that you’ve changed can be difficult sometimes –– especially when we’re still in the process. This is when I’ll encourage you to look at your patterns.

  • Do you recover faster?
  • Do you trust yourself sooner?
  • Do you recognize unhealthy behavior earlier?
  • Do you make career decisions differently?
  • Do you protect your peace?
  • Do you take risks the younger version of you feared?
  • Do you recognize your strengths without waiting for someone else to validate them?
  • Do you invest your time, money and energy differently?
  • Do you still want the things you desperately wanted 10 years ago?

The answers may reveal something important. The Elegant Woman doesn’t wake up one morning transformed. She looks back one day and realizes she no longer reacts the way she used to.

It’s important to pause on your journey of becoming long enough to look back at your progress. You may have changed much more than you realize. It’s worth taking a look at because that could be the fuel you need to keep going toward your destination.
